Less animal protein in your dog's food has many advantages. Nowadays, the risk of an excess of animal protein is much greater than the risk of a protein deficiency. The organism of domestic dogs is not designed to cope with a permanent excess of animal protein. A prolonged excess of protein puts strain on the metabolism of your four-legged friend, especially in old age, and in particular on the kidneys, liver, and intestinal environment. This often manifests itself in symptoms such as itching, reddened skin areas and skin inflammation, frequent licking of the paws, ear problems, flatulence, smacking, vomiting, persistent gastrointestinal problems, and hair loss. But fatigue, nervousness, and constant “hyperactivity” can also indicate that your four-legged friend is unable to utilize an excess of protein. Please note: these symptoms can, of course, also have other causes – if in doubt, you should always consult your veterinarian or animal health practitioner.
