The term microbiome refers to the entirety of all microorganisms in a living being. The main colonization site of the microbiome is the gastrointestinal tract. The surface of the skin and all mucous membranes directly exposed to the environment (e.g., nose) are also included. In addition to nutrient supply, the gut flora is especially important for supporting immune defense. An intact gut flora contributes to maintaining an immunological defense barrier against foreign germs and environmental toxins.

Stress, poor nutrition, or an immune system weakened by illness, medications - including antibiotics and deworming treatments - can negatively impact the microbiome. Pesticides, used as plant protection products on fields and in gardens, as well as directly on animals (spot-on treatments), also play a role. During a walk near sprayed fields, pesticide contact through paws, nose, and mouth (eating grass) can lead to gastrointestinal issues in dogs. When there is a gut imbalance, the microflora is no longer sufficiently able to perform its protective functions. Depending on the dog's constitution and the duration of this imbalance, it can develop into an acute or chronic illness. This includes issues such as bloody diarrhea, constipation, anal gland inflammation, vomiting, gastritis, and chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. Additionally, parasite infestation, skin eczema, coat problems, itching, fatigue, and food intolerances can occur, the latter often manifesting as vomiting in dogs.
